This is a tasty, mild sauce that my kids were basically eating by the spoonful. The garlic cuts the grassiness of the hemp seeds, and the orange juice adds a hint of sweetness to balance the lemon.
It’s also super nutritious: hemp seeds are rich in omega 3 fatty acids, contain all nine essential amino acids, and contain a solid amount of zinc and iron, which are two minerals that may need a little attention on a vegan diet. Plus, the vitamin C from the lemon and orange juice makes the iron significantly more absorbable.
I’m always on the lookout for easy sauces for bowls, and I’m always on the lookout for tasty ways to incorporate more hemp seeds, so I’m not sure why this sauce idea took me so long. Anyway, better late than never, and you can be sure I’ll be smothering it on bowls, adding it to salads (which I’ll also dress, with my everyday vinaigrette, probably), and dipping veggies into it on repeat for the foreseeable future.
3/4 cup hemp seeds
1 cup orange juice
juice of one lemon
about 2 cloves garlic (personal preference—kids may find too much garlic overpowering, adults may like plenty)
1/2 tsp salt
Add all ingredients to blender and blend on high until smooth.
